Johnson County Information

Johnson County is located in northeast section of the state of Kansas. It has one of the fastest growing populations in the state of Kansas, currently over 500,000 people.

Olathe is its county seat, whereas Overland park is the most populated. It is an affluent area, and mostly suburban (it is part of the Kansas City Metropolitan Area). In a fact, 3 cities in Johnson County were recently listed as of the "100 Best Cities to Live in the United States."

In terms of its history, Johnson County is named for the Rev. Thomas Johnson, and was one of the first counties to be established in the Kansas Territory back in 1855. Until the early 20th century, the county was mostly rural until the development of communities such as Overland Park and Mission Hills as suburbs of Kansas City, Missouri.

Today, Johnson County is one of the fastest growing areas in the Kansas City Metropolitan area. It is known by many as "the Orange County of the Midwest" for its extreme low-density sprawl and large development of new, upper-middle class and upper-class homes, especially in its southern portion of the county.
